Greece is recording an impressive rise from the German market, as arrivals of German tourists in the summer of 2025 increased by 6.7% compared with 2024 and by 27% compared with 2019, according to the German Federal Statistical Office.
A total of 4.5 million passengers traveled from German airports to Greek destinations, making Greece the fourth most popular destination for Germans.
Their top destination was Spain, with 10.5 million passengers, up 1.5% compared with summer 2024; second was Turkey with 7.7 million passengers, up 7.8% year-on-year; and third was Italy with 5.3 million passengers, up 5.8% from summer 2024.
In total, 68.5 million passengers departed from major German airports on international flights between April and October 2025, marking a 4.6% increase compared with the previous year.
Although this figure is still 2.8% lower than the record summer of 2019, it clearly demonstrates that the desire to travel has returned.
Among long-haul destinations, the United States remains a perennial favorite.
In summer 2025, it recorded 4.5 million travelers from German airports, though this is a 1.4% decrease compared with the previous year and 3.6% lower than summer 2019.
The second most popular long-haul destination is Egypt, with 1.4 million passengers, up 12.3% compared with 2024 and 15% compared with summer 2019.
The United Arab Emirates and Thailand also performed well in summer 2025. Although the peak season for both destinations is during the winter months, German travelers are increasingly choosing them for summer getaways as well.
China has also recovered – despite still experiencing significant losses compared with the pre-pandemic period. Business travel plays the biggest role here, but tourist destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, and the Great Wall are regaining momentum.
