A new era for British travelers | What the new data shows

British travelers are moving faster, covering longer distances and sharing their experiences more than ever, according to the new Polarsteps Year in Travel 2025. The report, based on millions of routes from more than 18 million users, highlights a clear shift in the travel habits of the United Kingdom.

Key findings of the report

  • 44% of Britons share their trips publicly – the highest rate in Europe, ahead of the Dutch (31%), French (32%) and Germans (29%).
  • The duration of the average trip has decreased from 22 to 19 days, while the distance traveled remains almost unchanged.
  • Britons are the most eager AI users in travel inspiration: 23% use it, compared with 18% in the Netherlands and France, and 17% in Germany.
  • Japan: the number one “dream destination” for Britons for 2026.
  • 85% of Britons under 18 are inspired to travel by viewing other users’ content.

More adventure in less time
Although holidays are becoming shorter, Britons are choosing more destinations and more “majestic” landscapes. At the same time, they share more content than any other major European nation.

For travelers aged 18–28, social media has now become the leading source of inspiration. And while artificial intelligence is gaining more ground in travel planning, examples continue to surface that highlight its limitations — from the incident with the influencer in Spain who received incorrect visa information to cases where AI invented non-existent destinations.

A new British appetite for exploration
Traditional favorite destinations like France and Spain remain high on the list, but Britons are increasingly turning to more “discoverable” places. Sri Lanka, Ecuador and especially Japan are proving to be strong magnets, with the Land of the Rising Sun emerging as the top “dream trip” for 2026.

2025 appears to mark a new era for British travelers: faster, bolder and more willing to share the world as they experience it — in real time.
