The Municipality of Serrès has approved its twinning with the Municipality of the Sacred City of Messolonghi, an initiative aimed at strengthening the cultural, historical, and social bonds between the two cities. This relationship is rooted in their shared historical connection to Anastasios Polyzonis, the prominent lawyer and 1821 revolutionary, who was the first to designate Messolonghi as a “Sacred City.” This historical link serves as a strong symbolic foundation for the new collaboration.
Historical Foundation and Modern Perspective
The twinning is considered a long-term commitment to friendship and cooperation, seeking to develop joint actions that enhance the social, cultural, and economic life of both cities. It is not merely a formal or short-term arrangement, but a framework intended to cultivate enduring bonds and highlight the importance of shared historical memory.
Shared Mission and Values
The initiative aims to remind future generations of the heroism and selflessness connecting the two cities, while also promoting the exchange of best practices in areas such as environment, culture, tourism, and local development. Central to the effort is the promotion of shared cultural heritage, with particular reference to Anastasios Polyzonis and Emmanouil Pappas.
Collaborations and Activities
The cooperation framework includes the exchange of information and joint initiatives in culture, education, science, tourism, health, and sports. Plans include joint commemorative or thematic events, enhanced tourism and business promotion, and the creation of shared historical and cultural routes.
European Opportunities and Joint Strategy
The twinning allows both municipalities to participate as partners in European and national programs, submitting joint proposals in areas such as environment, culture, tourism, and local development. It also seeks to promote and leverage the unique characteristics of each city at national and international levels.
