Samos 2026: The New Plan for Strengthening the Tourism Product

Western Samos enters 2026 with a comprehensive plan to upgrade its tourism product, investing in sustainability, the qualitative enhancement of visitor experiences, and the extension of the tourist season. The island, which already attracts a significant number of travelers from Greece, Central and Northern Europe, as well as Turkey, leverages the unique characteristics of its natural landscape, its cultural identity, and its long tradition in winemaking.

In 2025, 434,884 passengers were recorded through “Aristarchos of Samos” airport, a number that remained almost unchanged compared to 2024, confirming the stability and resilience of the destination. Domestic flights increased by 5.7%, while international traffic showed a slight decline, attributed to charter restrictions from specific markets.

At the same time, the maritime connection with the Turkish coast remained strong, with 145,496 passengers recorded in 2025. From the summer of 2026, a significant increase in demand from the United Kingdom is expected, thanks to the new direct flight connection by Jet2, which is estimated to enhance the island’s profile among higher-income visitors.

Interventions planned by Samos
Western Samos is moving away from the traditional model of simple promotion and focusing on interventions that substantially and directly upgrade the island’s tourism product. The plan prioritizes the highlighting of natural and cultural resources, supporting actions that showcase trails, beaches, traditional settlements, and historic sites. Cultural events and local festivals that attract visitors interested in authenticity and the history of the area are also central.

The strengthening of thematic tourism forms is also a key axis, with Samos promoting hiking and nature tourism, supporting sports events such as the “Steps of Pythagoras” and the “De Tour of Samos,” and highlighting its gastronomy and wine heritage, capitalizing on the international recognition of Samos Muscat wine. The recent award of the island as the “Best Greek Destination for Outdoor Activities” further reinforces this strategy.

Enhancing digital presence and qualitative upgrade
As part of the digital upgrade, the island is producing new audiovisual material, renewing digital channels, and implementing targeted campaigns to strengthen the destination’s recognition. The development of tools that facilitate visitor experience, such as digital maps and information points with QR codes, is also planned. At the same time, the plan includes beautification and aesthetic interventions in public spaces, aiming to improve the appearance of shared areas and the overall hospitality experience. Special emphasis is placed on improving the quality of the beaches. After receiving its first Blue Flag for Potami Beach, the goal for 2026 is to award Votsalakia Beach, one of the most popular in Western Samos.

Visitor profile and destination identity
Visitors to Western Samos are mainly aged 35 to 65, with increasing interest from younger ages 25 to 35, who seek authentic experiences in nature and alternative activities. The average length of stay ranges from five to eight days, while the season is gradually extending, particularly in spring and autumn. The destination’s image is enhanced by traditional hospitality, the quality of local cuisine, and the island’s non-commercialized character, which are key reasons many travelers return.

Areas that shape the modern identity of Western Samos
The region includes two of the island’s most important hubs. Karlovasi, the municipal seat, is a vibrant center with university activity, neoclassical architecture, a developing market, and beaches such as Potami and Seitania. Marathokampos, with the imposing Kerkis Mountain and the coastal zone of Kampi, combines authentic traditional elements with modern tourism infrastructure, offering experiences that balance mountain and sea.
