An international tender for the construction of an electricity interconnection line between Crete and the mainland electricity grid will be held in the first quarter of 2019, ADMIE officials said, according to ANA.
The project is scheduled to be concluded by the end of 2022 in order to cut the time period necessary either for the preservation of PPC electricity production units or the installation of new units using natural gas as fuel. The Greek Energy Regulatory Authority is examining all alternative solutions before selecting the one with the lowest cost. Extending the operation of PPC units needs approval by the European Commission, although the government has made it clear that it will not jeopardise the islands’s energy supply.
