Sfakia: €17.3 mil. project approved for improvement and expansion of Mavros Limnonas port

The implementation of the project for the improvement and expansion of the Mavros Limnonas port in Chora Sfakion has been approved, a project of broader developmental significance and particular importance for the area. The approval was issued on December 31, 2025, with a total budget of €17.3 million, and bears the signature of the Secretary General.

According to the Mayor of Sfakia, the project is expected to enhance the safety and functionality of the port by improving infrastructure and upgrading the overall appearance of the area. At the same time, passenger access and the accessibility of coastal areas will be facilitated, while conditions will be created for further development of tourism, visitor traffic, and the local economy.

At the same time, the President of the Port Authority described the project as necessary for Sfakia, noting that it constitutes a particularly positive development for the area and for the overall upgrade of its port role.

In parallel, the agreement between the Deputy Regional Governor of Chania and the President of the Chania Port Fund for joint cooperation with the municipal authority is considered important. The aim is to identify the most functional connection of the port with the existing provincial road network, so that the implementation of the project can proceed without problems or delays.

The Mayor of Sfakia expresses his thanks to the President and the executives of the Chania Port Fund for their contribution to securing the approval, as well as to the Member of Parliament of New Democracy, noting that her interventions played a decisive role in preventing the project from being excluded due to environmental objections raised during the approval process.

On the occasion of the announcement of the approval, the municipal authority of Sfakia also refers to the late former Mayor of Sfakia, who had worked for many years toward the realization of this specific project, from 1999 to 2002, contributing decisively to the vision of a modern, dignified, and functional port at Mavros Limnonas.
