AP reports from Athens that dozens of long-abandoned state properties in the heart of the Greek capital are up for development, to improve public finances and revive the recession-battered capital’s grimier parts.
The impressive portfolio features one of Athens’ oldest houses, a central hotel, multi-story office buildings and a marble-balconied 19th century structure containing a historic cinema.
They all belong to Greek state pension funds, and instead of selling them cheap and fast, the government is eyeing long-term rentals.
About 50 are on the current list and many are striking edifices in Athens’ old commercial center, whole sections of which were killed by unchecked immigration, riots and Greece’s financial crisis that spawned wastelands of empty, shuttered shops.
