Chios: Three-story traditional building converted into tourist accommodation

The “green light” for the study of the repair of a three-story traditional building with a loft and its conversion into tourist accommodation, owned by Eleni Apostolopoulou, in Chios, is given by a decision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chios.

The building is located at the location “Kylimantoura” or “Kylimountra”, within the protection zone of the central defensive tower of the settlement of Pyrgi in the municipality of Chios.

As the Ephorate of Antiquities has determined, the proposed interventions contribute to the maintenance and functionality of the building and do not cause direct or indirect damage to the medieval settlement of Pyrgi.

However, certain conditions are foreseen which must be observed such as…

All the windows and cupboards of the building should be maintained
The balcony of the 1st floor (mezzanine) should be abolished and the door should either remain and a railing should be placed in its opening, or a window should be created in its place, with a ratio of 2:3.
All the frames should be wooden, panelled or nailed.
The building’s gutters should be either stone (open channel type) or copper.
Air conditioning units, solar water heaters or tanks should not be placed outside the building and in case any of these are needed, the best possible solution will be found in consultation with the Chios Municipal Water and Sewerage Authority.
In the event of placing a sign, it should be wooden, measuring 0.50 x 0.70 m., or with individual letter characters, which should be placed parallel to the facade of the building and not perpendicular to it.
The amended study should be submitted for approval to the Chios Municipal Planning and Development Authority.
In addition, the decision provides that the works will be monitored by the Service, which should be notified in good time before their commencement.
