Municipality of Megisti: Digital applications to enhance the tourist experience

The municipality of Megisti is moving forward with the creation of an innovative information mechanism that will allow visitors to the island to discover the rich history, culture, and sights of the place through the use of QR codes.

Specifically, the QR codes will be placed at strategic points on the island and will be linked to a specially designed website that will be hosted on the official website of the municipality. At a later stage, the project will be expanded with the creation of a mobile application, which will offer additional interactive features.

The objectives of the action are to enhance the tourist experience through technology, to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Kastelorizo, as well as to provide easy access to information for visitors through digital media.

In detail, the content will be accessible through the official website of the municipality, both by visitors to the island and by those who wish to learn about Kastelorizo ??from a distance. Each point of interest will be accompanied by written information that will include its history, architectural details, information about the local culture, and other relevant information.

The website will also display high-quality material, such as high-resolution photographs, 360-degree photos, panoramas, and videos. This will offer users a comprehensive and immersive experience, bringing them closer to the real image of the island.

As part of the project, a map will also be created that will allow users to see the various points of interest on the island, with the ability to zoom in and move. Each point will be linked to the corresponding content and will offer the possibility to view photos, videos, and related information.

In addition, audio tours will be integrated, which will be available in multiple languages. Through this service, users will be able to choose to listen to the narration while browsing the point or from a distance.

A tool for education and to reward tourists

The project can be strengthened through collaboration with schools that could use it as an educational tool. Students could participate in specially designed interactive tours or create content for the platform.

Furthermore, a reward system could be integrated for visitors who use the QR code system and the application. For example, completing specific routes or visiting all the important points of the island could be rewarded with a digital certificate or some privilege (e.g. a discount in local stores).

Finally, the action could be integrated with other tourism infrastructures, such as local hotels, museums, and tour operators. These partnerships could include special offers or provide access to additional content for guests staying at partnering businesses.
