Free WiFi in Karpathos: A breath of digital connectivity for residents and visitors

Karpathos is entering a digital empowerment trajectory, as the Municipality approved the terms and conditions for the implementation of the free wireless internet access project, within the framework of the “WiFi4GR” action. The project is co-financed and is part of the general program for the development of public wireless broadband access points throughout the country.

The initiative concerns the installation of WiFi hotspots in selected locations on the island, covering both central and remote areas, such as: around the Olympus community store, Konaki in Pigadia, Diafani, Aperi, Pyles, Othos, Agioi Apostoloi in Amoopi, the square in Mesochori, Volada (community hall), Arkasa and Menetes. The selection of the hotspots was based on pre-approved lists, while the final decision was taken with the consent of the Municipal Council.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Special Program Management Service “Digital Transformation”, the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Posts of the Ministry of Digital Governance, and the Municipality of Karpathos. The contractors of the individual contracts will undertake the full supply, installation, configuration, and operation of the necessary equipment (antennas, access points, management systems), while also guaranteeing the uninterrupted operation of the infrastructure for at least three years, through a central monitoring system.

The Municipality committed to providing electricity and a high-speed internet connection (at least 100Mbps, or the maximum available in the area) at the selected points for at least five years. The relevant cost will be covered by municipal resources.

Documentation of the availability of electricity and internet will be done through certificates from providers or relevant technical documentation, ensuring the functionality of the project at each location.

With this new venture, the Municipality of Karpathos aims to improve the quality of life of residents and enhance the experience of visitors to the island, while paving the way for a more modern and accessible digital public space.
