Heraklion, Crete, will host the 11th International Conference on Civil Protection & New Technologies – SafeHeraklion 2025 from October 22 to 24, 2025, co-organized by the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) in collaboration with SafeGreece.
The conference, now a well-established institution in the field of civil protection, brings together scientists, public authority officials, representatives of local government organizations, risk management agencies, volunteer groups, and innovative companies from Greece and abroad. Its goal is to strengthen cross-sector cooperation, share experiences and best practices, and harness new technologies — with a special focus on Artificial Intelligence — in the prevention and management of natural and man-made disasters.
26 Thematic Areas with Focus on Modern Challenges
The SafeHeraklion 2025 program is rich and multifaceted, featuring 26 thematic units that address critical issues in civil protection and environmental management. Notable topics include:
Santorini Seismicity 2025: A special session on recent seismic activity and lessons for civil protection.
Artificial Intelligence in Civil Protection: Applications of AI in forecasting, early warning systems, and operational risk management.
Crete and the Climate Crisis: The impact of climate change on the island, infrastructure adaptation, and future risk planning.
Alongside academic presentations, the event will feature workshops, roundtable discussions, and side activities to encourage active participation and knowledge exchange among attendees.
HMU at the Core of Resilience
The event will be hosted at HMU’s Estavromenos campus in Heraklion, highlighting the university’s active role in sustainable development, education, and risk management. With a strong research profile and international collaborations, HMU encourages the involvement of its faculty, students, and research teams in initiatives that promote prevention, preparedness, and resilience within local communities against both current and future threats.
Co-organizing the event with SafeGreece — a dynamic organization promoting dialogue and knowledge transfer in civil protection — further enhances the conference’s credibility and impact.
Addressing Local and Global Needs
At a time when natural disasters are becoming more frequent and intense, SafeHeraklion 2025 seeks to provide answers and build bridges between science, policy, technology, and local communities. Strengthening resilience — especially in high-risk regions like Crete — is now a top priority for both local authorities and the national civil protection strategy.
The conference is open to scientists, professionals, and organizations wishing to present research papers, innovative solutions, or practical case studies. Abstract submissions for presentations and talks are already open.
