Olga Kefalogianni: “Artificial Intelligence can take Greek tourism off the ground”

In Western Macedonia, the proposal for the creation of a European AI Giga Factory

The proposal for the creation of one of the major European Artificial Intelligence infrastructures —the so-called AI Giga Factory— in Western Macedonia was presented by PPC, with the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, attending and highlighting the strategic importance of the investment for the country and the European Union.

During her statement, the Minister emphasized that this initiative can substantially strengthen the competitiveness of the EU. in the field of Artificial Intelligence, leveraging Greece’s comparative advantages.
“The creation of an AI Giga Factory in Greece will open new paths for research, public administration, social services and many economic sectors – including tourism”, she stressed.

Ms. Kefalogianni described the project as an “emblematic investment” to strengthen European technological autonomy, noting that it will contribute to the creation of a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence ecosystem. An ecosystem capable of supporting research, businesses and public administration, while promoting the digital economy and creating new highly specialized jobs.

According to the PPC proposal, the “Artificial Intelligence Giga Factory” aspires to be a leading European infrastructure that will strengthen Europe’s capabilities in the sector, promote innovation and ensure its technological independence.
The Greek infrastructure will be based on strategic partnerships and the country’s unique advantages, providing world-class services and expertise for the benefit of research, the public and businesses across Europe.

Focusing on the tourism sector, the Minister highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence in improving the travel experience, understanding visitor needs and promoting Greek destinations.

As she said, the Ministry of Tourism is already investing in innovative projects that utilize AI technologies, with the aim of diversifying and enriching the Greek tourism product, extending the tourist season and creating added value for destinations and businesses.

Among the ongoing actions:

  • The “maiGreece” application, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance, which provides personalized travel information and connection to 112.
  • The new Action of the Recovery and Resilience Fund, for the development of a traveler information and service system through 2nd generation Artificial Intelligence technologies, which will be the evolution of the official travel portal visitgreece.
