Greek tourism: 2.81 million overnight stays in short-term rental accommodation in the first quarter

Overnight stays in short-term rental accommodation in Greece increased by 15.2% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to data presented by Eurostat.

The data show that during the first quarter of this year, 2.81 million overnight stays were recorded in Greece. overnight stays in accommodations offered for booking through major platforms (Airbnb, Booking and Expedia), i.e. approximately 372,800 more than in the first quarter of 2024, with our country recording the 6th largest increase after Malta (+33.5%), Finland (+23.6%), Bulgaria (+22.3%), Norway (+18.9%) and Liechtenstein (+17%).

More specifically, short-term rental overnight stays in Greece in January 2025 amounted to 826,245, compared to 641,045 in the corresponding month of 2024, in February they were 834,813 compared to 676,119 in 2024, and in March 1.15 million compared to 1.12 million. in March last year.

A mild increase in overnight stays in Europe

In Europe, short-term rental overnight stays are showing a more moderate increase compared to last year, and this is the first year with a single-digit growth rate since the start of the pandemic. In total, 129.6 million overnight stays were recorded in the first quarter of the year, up 4.8% compared to the first quarter of 2024 and 34.5% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023.

Upward trends were observed in overnight stays in January (+16.3%, to 39 million) and February (+11.6%, to 46 million), but March recorded only 45 million. overnight stays and a decrease of 8.6% compared to the corresponding month of 2024, due to the Easter holidays in April.

According to Eurostat, in 2024 Greece recorded 45 million short-term rental nights, being, based on the number of nights, the fifth largest destination in Europe after France (192 million), Spain (171 million), Italy (127 million), and Germany (60 million).

Last year, 854 million nights were spent in short-term rental accommodation in the EU and the European Free Trade Area (EFTA), compared to 719 million in 2023 and 512 million in 2019.
