Greece’s Economy Minister Dimitri Papadimitriou signed on Friday a ministerial decision allowing the optional operation of shops on Sundays, for the period between May and October.
The decision concerns the regions of Attica and central Macedonia, which were selected because of the high numbers of visitors they attract. The decision will be activated when it is published in the government gazette, which is expected to be done in the next few hours.
The Federation of Private Sector Employees has announced a 24-hour strike to protest the decision while the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE) said it will appeal it to the Council of State.
According to the ministerial decision, shops located in the following areas in Attica and Central Macedonia are allowed to operate on Sundays:
1. The part of Poseidonos Avenue, which is included in the municipalities of Kallithea, Palaio Faliro, Alimou, Argyroupoli-Elliniko and Glyfada.
2. The section of the Municipality of Piraeus that is surrounded by the streets: Gr. Lambraki, Akti Moutsopoulou, 2as Merarchias, Akti Miaouli, Akti Poseidonos, Akti Kallimasioti, Alipedou, Kekropos and Karaoli and Demetriou.
3. The area of the Municipality of Kallithea suburb in Athens, which is surrounded by the streets of Egeos, Euripidou, Zervou, Agias Lavras, Kremou, Harokopou, Dimosthenous, Skra, Aristidou, Olympias, Iatridou, Platonos, Spartis, Eleftherios Venizelos Avenue, Pericleous, Metamorfosis, Praxitelouss, Isminis, Thali, Peisistratou and from Heron Polytechniou Square to Poseidonos Avenue.
4. The portion of the Municipality of Paleo Faliro, which stretches from Amphitheas Avenue to Poseidonos Avenue.
5. The section of the Municipality of Alimos, which is surrounded by the streets of Ellis, Eleftherias Avenue, Thoucididou, Athanasiou Diakou, Kotopouli, P. Mela, Eptanissou, Alimou Avenue and Poseidonos Avenue.
6. The part of the Municipality of Glyfada, which stretches from Vouliagmenis Avenue to Poseidonos Avenue.
7. The part of Athens International Airport, which is designated as a commercial park.
8. The historical center of Thessaloniki, which is surrounded by Egnatia, 26th October Avenue, Karatassou, Navarhou Kountouriotou, Nikis Avenue, Pavlou Mela, Professor Antonios Keramopoulos and Stefanos Tattis.
