Government to look into possible Greek nationals on Paradise Papers list

The government “will investigate thoroughly” all the names mentioned in the Paradise Papers, leaked documents of offshore accounts released this week, to see if any Greek nationals have committed any tax evasion crimes and must be led before justice, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Tuesday.

During a regular press briefing, the minister of State told the media about government initiatives to fight tax evasion and promote transparency, such as the voluntary declaration of untaxed assets, and collaboration with other countries for information exchange.

Issues like those of the Paradise Papers cannot be managed by countries individually, but the European Union and the Eurozone must decide on a comprehensive policy on tax evasion, he noted.

On the social dividend

Tzanakopoulos also announced that the government expects to announce the final size of the social dividend and those eligible to receive it within November.

He stressed that the opposition parties should weigh their responsibilities and especially main opposition New Democracy should carefully consider “its stance last year, when it voted against the distribution of 617 million euros to the low-income pensioners, [and decide whether to] insist on the same antisocial line, which blatantly ignores the citizens in real need.”

On the course of the third review, he confirmed the very positive atmosphere and prospects of the Greek economy, citing the short discussion on the Greek programme at the recent Eurogroup meeting as well as the statements of European officials.
