Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis speaking on Thursday at the annual Brussels Economic Forum organized by the European Commission, expressed support for the Green Deal and Green Transition. However, he emphasized the need for corresponding financial support. “And I see no better way of supporting public policies than continuing after 2026 with a new funding package, the Recovery Fund, which emphasizes precisely these policies,” Hatzidakis said, ANA reports.
At the same time, he referred to Greece’s significant progress noting in particular the 80% reduction in coal use in electricity generation, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 43% compared to 2005, and the increase in the share of renewable sources. He stressed that Greece is ranked 7th worldwide based on the percentage of electricity generated by solar and wind and 5th in terms of capacity per capita.
