Olga Kefalogianni | The goal: All of Greece is a 12-month destination

The Ministry of Tourism’s strategy for the qualitative and sustainable development of Greek tourism, focusing on Athens as a 12-month destination, was analyzed by the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, as a keynote speaker at the CNN Insights – Athens 365 conference.

Ms. Kefalogianni referred to the policies and initiatives for the expansion of tourism activity throughout the territory and throughout the year, pointing out that in addition to its contribution to income and employment, tourism supports sectors such as trade and cultural activity.

As she noted, the Ministry of Tourism is working on the basis of a strategic plan that capitalizes on opportunities and provides answers to modern challenges, with the main objectives of qualitative and sustainable development, as well as strengthening the resilience of destinations.

In this context, she referred to recent institutional interventions to simplify licensing procedures for tourist infrastructure – accommodation, tourist ports, co-ownership hotels – as well as to the regulation of the short-term rental economy, in order to ensure healthy competition.

The Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament for Athens, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, referred to the significant contribution of tourism to the economic and social life of Athens, highlighting the increase in travel traffic, especially during the autumn and winter months. This development confirms the establishment of the city as a destination throughout the year, with Athens now among the top European city break destinations.

She also underlined that the positive course of Athens as a tourist destination is the result of coordinated policies and targeted interventions. In particular, the upgrading of the hotel potential, combined with the rich activities and cultural capital, strengthen the city’s dynamics. At the same time, urban regeneration projects and increased investment activity are making Athens a model of international tourist appeal, offering authentic and quality travel experiences all year round.

In closing, Ms. Kefalogianni referred to the need to continuously exploit development opportunities, with an emphasis on conference, exhibition, cultural, medical and wellness tourism, highlighting the importance of gastronomy and sports events, such as the Authentic Marathon, in strengthening travel traffic all year round, and stressed that sustainable tourism development requires cooperation between all stakeholders, so that Athens and Greek tourism can achieve even better results.
