Marginal decline of Greeks, strong presence of foreign visitors – Average length of stay at 4 days
The main tourism indicators recorded an upward trend in May 2025, according to data from the monthly survey of arrivals and overnight stays in tourist accommodations by ELSTAT. Specifically, arrivals in the country’s tourist accommodations amounted to 3,855,399, recording an increase of 1.94% compared to May 2024, while overnight stays amounted to 15,344,134, showing an increase of 1.87%.
The results reflect the continuation of the positive dynamics of Greek tourism, with arrivals from abroad strengthening, but also with a slight decline in the performance of domestic tourism demand.
Strong contribution from abroad
More specifically, foreign visitors recorded an increase of 2.5% in arrivals and 2.2% in overnight stays compared to May 2024. In contrast, domestic visitors experienced a slight decline with arrivals decreasing by 0.6% and overnight stays by 0.9%.
Foreign visitors continued to constitute the main support pool for the country’s tourism product. According to the survey, 81.8% of total arrivals and 90% of total overnight stays are attributed to foreign tourists.
Average stay: 4 days
The average length of stay in accommodations in May 2025 was 4.0 days, reflecting the stability of short to medium-term holiday choices for the period.
The survey and its significance
The survey, conducted monthly by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), covers all hotel-type accommodations, campsites, as well as short-stay collective accommodations, such as rented rooms. It is carried out within the framework of Regulation (EU) 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council.
The purpose of the survey is to systematically record the arrivals and overnight stays of both domestic and foreign visitors, depending on their country of permanent residence. At the same time, data related to the capacity and occupancy of accommodations is collected, providing a reliable statistical tool for recording tourist traffic in the country.
