Endless… fees for hotels and tourism – What is the waste management fee?

The municipality of Eastern Mani has set the waste management fee “I pay as I throw away” for the year 2026, on the turnover of businesses.

Specifically, for catering establishments, a rate of 2% on the annual turnover was set, for accommodation businesses providing full meals and camping, a rate of 1.5% on the annual turnover, and for accommodation businesses providing only breakfast, a rate of 1% on the annual turnover.

The “Pay as you throw” waste management fee for the year 2026 will be collected monthly upon submission of a declaration by entrepreneurs to the Municipality’s Revenue Department, accompanied by a copy of the Income-Expense Book for the corresponding month, and at the end of each year, the corresponding VAT and income tax declarations will be submitted to the Municipality’s services as proof of payment of the entire corresponding fee.

In her statement, the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Georgia Lyrofoni, during the meeting to discuss the issue, presented to the House the proposal of Mr. Mayor, which, among other things, stated the following: “It is generally accepted that Waste Management-Collection increases during the summer period. This happens a lot in our Municipality as well. In particular, during the summer months in our Municipality, there is increased tourist development throughout the wider area. Thus, inevitably, catering and tourism businesses in particular produce a much larger amount of waste than in the other months. For these reasons, our Municipality has implemented the “Pay as You Throw” program since 2025 with the aim of a fair and transparent charge per waste produced at the beginning and of our modern legal obligations. This program will concern catering and hospitality businesses throughout the territory of our Municipality which, in addition to the municipal fees they will pay for the square meters of the building where they are housed, will also pay a Waste Management Fee for 2026. Thus, catering and hospitality businesses throughout the territory of our Municipality, in addition to the municipal fees they will pay for the square meters of the building where they are housed, will also pay a Waste Management Fee. of the building where they are housed, they will also pay a waste management fee.”
