DMO “Mykonos”: New strategic plan for sustainable tourism development 2026–2028

Mykonos, one of the most recognizable and emblematic destinations internationally, is entering a new era of strategic tourism governance, with the programmatic agreement between the Municipality and the Development Organization “Development Perspective S.A.”. The agreement, which will cover the period 2026–2028, establishes the operation of a modern destination management model, in accordance with European standards and the guiding principles for “Model Integrated Tourism Destinations”.

A new governance model for mature destinations

The tourism development of recent decades has led to a new set of challenges for popular destinations, which are called upon to address issues of tourist congestion, resource management, environmental pressure and the need to diversify their product. As highlighted in the context of the convention, modern tourism policies have gone beyond the narrow limits of traditional promotion and now require a multifaceted approach, planning, coordination and innovation.

Mykonos, with decades of pioneering work in Greek tourism, recognizes that maintaining its competitiveness now depends on the ability to implement integrated destination management policies — policies that link tourism activity with social cohesion, sustainability, spatial organization and modern technology.

Creation of the “Mykonos” Destination Management and Promotion Organization

The main objective of the program agreement is the establishment and operation of the “Mykonos” Destination Management and Promotion Organization (DMO). This structure will be the institutional vehicle for coordinating all tourism policy, management and communication activities of the island.

The DMO will undertake the design and implementation of a comprehensive identity strategy for Mykonos, utilizing place branding tools, the study of international markets, digital promotion platforms and visitor data. It will function as a connecting link between the municipal authority, tourism operators, local businesses, associations and the residents themselves, promoting a participatory approach.

Implementation of an annual tourism promotion program

The second part of the contract concerns the preparation and implementation of the annual tourism promotion program of the Municipality of Mykonos. The program will include targeted promotional campaigns in markets of strategic interest, participation in international exhibitions, publicity actions and collaborations with specialized communication agencies.

Special emphasis will be placed on the diversification of the tourism product, through the promotion of thematic forms of tourism, such as cultural, maritime, gastronomic and luxury tourism, which will contribute to the expansion of the tourist season and sustainable development.

Mykonos as a model of balance between development and sustainability

Mykonos, with approximately 11,000 permanent residents and a population exceeding 100,000 during the tourist season, is faced with the need to balance tourism pressure and preserve its unique character. The agreement with “Development Perspective S.A.” aims to create tools to monitor tourism activity, strengthen the island’s carrying capacity and ensure that tourism development remains in harmony with its natural and cultural environment.

Through the new management mechanism, Mykonos will be able to monitor sustainability indicators, draw up data-driven policies and integrate technology into the daily operation of tourism services.

Strategic role for the national economy

Mykonos’ tourism success is not limited to the island’s borders. The Municipality, with the contribution of the DMO and the annual promotion program, seeks to enhance the destination’s contribution to the national economy, through maintaining high quality services, diversifying the market and attracting investment.

The new structure is expected to act as an example for other mature Greek destinations, proving that sustainable management, collaboration and innovation can coexist with timeless glamour and international recognition.
