N. Hardalias: €35 mil. sewage project in Salamina – Environmental protection and upgrade of everyday life

The Act of Inclusion in the Regional Program “Attica 2021–2027” for the construction of a wastewater sewerage network in the Aianteio area of the Municipality of Salamina was signed by the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, marking the implementation of the largest infrastructure project ever financed on the island. The project is considered of pivotal importance, as it is expected to bring substantial improvements to residents’ quality of life, strong environmental protection, and compliance with European directives on urban wastewater management.

The total construction budget amounts to €35 million plus VAT, of which €29.56 million will be covered by resources from the Region of Attica, while the remaining amount will be contributed by EYDAP as a participating body. The Act was co-signed by the Mayor of Salamina, Giorgos Panagopoulos, with the President of EYDAP, Giorgos Stergiou, and the company’s CEO, Haris Sachinis, present at the signing ceremony.

Technical characteristics of the project

The purpose of the project is the collection and transfer of urban wastewater from the planning units of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Athanasios, Agios Dimitrios–Zorbalas, Aianteio, and Kak?a Vigla, with the final recipient being EYDAP’s Psyttaleia Wastewater Treatment Center.

More specifically, the project provides for:

– the construction of a gravity pipeline network with a total length of 66 km and pipe diameters ranging from Ö200 to Ö600, using open trench excavation,
– the implementation of 4,700 external branches (private connections),
– the creation of 8 pumping stations, with accompanying twin pipeline networks, totaling 6.8 km in length and pipe diameters from Ö100 to Ö450.

The overall project will include 72.8 kilometers of sewer pipelines, while the Region of Attica aims for the tendering process to be completed by the end of February 2026. Of particular importance is the fact that, within the framework of the funding, citizens are exempt from the imposition of a compensatory fee, significantly reducing the financial burden on households and making the project socially fair and universally beneficial.

As emphasized by the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, after signing the Act:
“The inclusion of the implementation of the wastewater sewerage network in Aianteio in the Regional Program ‘Attica 2021–2027’ constitutes a substantive intervention with immediate and long-term benefits for both Salamina and its residents. It is a project that simultaneously addresses issues of public health, environmental protection, and sustainable development, upgrading the daily life of citizens as a whole.

With its completion, the safe collection and transfer of urban wastewater is ensured, pollution of the natural and marine environment is drastically reduced, the Saronic Gulf is protected, and the area’s compliance with European environmental directives is strengthened. At the same time, modern sewerage infrastructure is created, worthy of the needs of a contemporary island, which is a fundamental prerequisite for rational spatial development and the attraction of new investments.

Of particular significance is the fact that the project’s funding is secured to such an extent that citizens are not financially burdened, reinforcing the social character of the intervention. As the Region of Attica, we continue to invest consistently in high value-added infrastructure projects that shape a sustainable, resilient, and environmentally shielded future for Salamina and Attica as a whole. We want to stand by society, and we prove it with actions, not words.”

From his side, the Mayor of Salamina, Giorgos Panagopoulos, stated:
“We are particularly happy as the implementation of a project of crucial importance for the development of our island, for the economy, and for the environment is about to begin. This is the largest funding ever received by the Municipality of Salamina for a single project. A big thank you to the Regional Governor of Attica, Mr. Nikos Hardalias, who listened to our needs and contributed decisively to the start of construction of the sewerage network in the Aianteio area.”

The President of EYDAP, Giorgos Stergiou, said:
“The construction of the sewerage network in Aianteio, Salamina, is a project of substance, with a clear environmental and social footprint. EYDAP is actively participating in yet another initiative that upgrades critical infrastructure and protects public health, in close cooperation with the Region of Attica and the Municipality of Salamina. It is an investment in the future of Salamina and in the quality of life of its residents.”

The CEO of EYDAP, Haris Sachinis, stressed that:
“The sewerage project in Aianteio is a characteristic example of how modern infrastructure can substantially change citizens’ daily lives and shield the environment. EYDAP, leveraging its expertise and experience, contributes decisively to the implementation of projects that enhance sustainable development and ensure high-quality services for local communities.”

Present at the signing ceremony of the Act of Inclusion, in addition to those mentioned above, were the Special Secretary of the Region of Attica, Elena Rapti, the Head of the Managing Authority of the Regional Program (EYDP) ‘Attica’ 2021–2027, Dimitris Drosis, and the Deputy Mayor for Financial Services of the Municipality of Salamina, Athanasios Alaiskas.
