Landmark Decision for Suspension of New Construction in Western Milos – Even for Approved Permits

The Municipality of Milos has approved the temporary suspension of all new construction in Western Milos, within the boundaries of the Natura 2000 area, for any building project that has not yet begun, even if a building permit has already been approved.

Western Milos, one of the island’s most valuable natural and geological treasures, is under Natura 2000 protection. This area is not merely a map of restrictions; it is a living ecosystem, a landscape of international value, a place that, if lost, cannot be restored. Over the past two years, significant pressure for new construction activity in this zone has been observed.

The municipality’s suspension decision will remain in effect until the issuance of the relevant Joint Ministerial Decision, which will define the protection framework and allowable activities in the Natura 2000 areas, or until the completion of the Special Urban / Spatial Planning of the area.

The purpose of the suspension is to protect the natural environment, prevent irreversible impacts on a sensitive ecosystem, and align the Municipality of Milos with obligations arising from European and national law.

The Municipality of Milos has committed to immediately inform all relevant stakeholders, competent authorities, and citizens about the decision, as well as to closely monitor the progress of the Joint Ministerial Decision and spatial planning, ensuring that Western Milos remains a space of respect, not exploitation.

According to the municipality:
“The protection of Western Milos is not a mere procedural formality. It is a responsibility. Once the planning is completed, we will have clear rules allowing development where permitted and protection where required. Until then, we must hit the brakes. Because whatever is built chaotically today will cost the place dearly tomorrow.”

As Mayor Manos Mikelis stated:
“There must and will be a struggle to establish standards and a legal protection framework for this place, because with the investments made so far and those planned for the future on our island, soon we will have no place left.”
