Tourism: Crete first in international air arrivals in Greece in the 10‑month period

Crete continued its unstoppable upward trajectory in October, confirming its leading role in Greek tourism. Based on the most recent data from INSETE, the island’s two major airports confirm a record-year picture, as international arrivals continue to grow steadily. At this point, it should be noted that overall air traffic in Crete increased by 5.2% over the ten-month period, a figure that reflects historically high performance.

Heraklion: over 4 million international arrivals
Heraklion once again surpasses expectations, reaching 4,013,970 international arrivals from January to October. The increase of 226 thousand passengers, or 6%, consolidates the airport’s role as the island’s largest inbound tourism hub. Central and Northern European demand remains strong, maintaining high occupancy rates and boosting the autumn period.

In domestic arrivals, Heraklion recorded 783,505 passengers, an increase of 10.3%, highlighting significant internal mobility and the stable value of the destination for the domestic market.

Chania: 3.3% growth and strengthened international presence
In Chania, international arrivals reached 1,571,047 passengers, marking an increase of 50 thousand and a 3.3% rise. The British market remains the main pillar, with Germany and Poland sustaining the season’s momentum and extending demand duration.

Similarly, domestic arrivals increased by 9.2%, reaching 414,830, reflecting expanded domestic travel mobility and improved connectivity.

Crete at the top
At the same time, the island maintains the top position nationwide in international arrivals, with 5,585,517 passengers over the ten-month period and a 5.2% increase. This performance confirms that 2025 is shaping up to be a peak year for Crete, while the extended tourist demand and the strengthening of the two major airports suggest a strong outlook for 2026.
