Cyprus president: Territory issue could be discussed elsewhere

If the territory issue must be discussed in another country, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said, than the members of the National Council will accompany him.

Upon his return from his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Tuesday, the President said: “If, upon continuing, such progress is noted, allowing us to move on to a different stage on the fifth chapter of discussion, the territory adjustment, than there is a chance that the meeting, due to concerns expressed by Mr Akinci, could be held in another country.  In such a case, of course, I will have to tell the members of the National Council to accompany me, so that there can be a direct and collective response to the issue that must be dealt with.”

He added that if there is progress on the territory issue, which allows than to potentially move to the next step, which will be to convene a multi-lateral conference that will deal with the issue of guarantees.

These things will occur under the precondition that there is progress in the discussions,” President Anastasiades said.

Asked is the issue of security and guarantees will also be discussed in Cyprus, the President said: “Brainstorming can happen, but the most important thing is that the focus on the existing differences continues, so that there can be convergence on the issues, which will allow us to move on to the fifth chapter, which is the territory issue and its inherently connected issue on property.”

Regarding the stance of Mr Akinci, President Anastasiades mentioned that he would not comment on interviews of media reports, adding that what he can say is that Mr Akinci is dedicated to move forward together in an effort to achieve, if possible, the goal of having a solution in 2016, “a political solution, a complete solution, presuming the Turkish Cypriot side, and also the Turkish side, in whatever it is involved in, will show the good will, which is expected by all those who say that want a complete solution of the Cyprus problem.”

President Anastasiades closed saying that he had a productive meeting with Mr Akinci, as they had the opportunity to go over each chapter to see where existing differences lie, so that October will be a month of intense discussion, with approximately nine meetings scheduled with the potential of a tenth being added.
