Cyprus president to visit Athens for missing persons event

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades is set to travel to Athens, Greece on Monday, where he will attend an event for missing Greek persons following the 1974 Turkish invasion on Cyprus.

The event, to be held at Cacoyannis Foundation, will also be attended by Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

Anastasiades will address and give honorary diplomas to the missing persons’ relatives.

Before the honorary event, the President is scheduled to attend a working lunch organised to honour the Cyprus Shipowners Union.

Anastasiades is expected to be accompanied by Transport, Communications and Works Minister, Marios Demetriades, and Government Spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. UN-led peace talks, aimed at reuniting the island under a federal roof, resumed in May 2015.
