The International Hellenikon airport or simply “Hellenikon” was the international airport of Athens for more than 60 years. Its corridors were once vibrant with traffic and it welcomedtourists from every part of the world who wanted to admire Greece.
In 2001 the last airplane landed on its airfield and since then it remains closed, even though some of the areas are still used.
The «Olympic Eagle» (SX-OAB) is the only 747 aircraft in Greek territory.
The aircraft can now be seen on the southeast side of former Hellinikon Airport. It was constructed in 1973 in the US and was received by Olympic Airways. It could accommodate 426 passengers and was divided into two spaces: Business Class and Economy.
This aircraft has special features that distinguish it from 747s owned by other carriers: the ancient Greek element is kept intensely present inside. Its cabin is divided into “zones”, each of which has a name from parts of Acropolis in Athens. For example, Zone A was called “Propylaea” Zone B “Erechthion” Zone C “Parthenon” etc. In general, the passenger compartment is kept today in good condition but unfortunately the same is not true for the cockpit. Due to lack of storage for aircraft in previous years, several valuable instruments have been stolen.
