Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan met Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in Istanbul on Saturday prior to the upcoming Mont Pelerin-based peace talks scheduled to take place from Monday through to Friday.
Erdogan and Akinci “agreed to stay determined to resolve issues through negotiations in the upcoming talks [in Switzerland],” reported Anadolu Agency.
Erdogan and Akinci noted that negotiations were at a “sensitive juncture, agreeing that a bi-zonal and bi-communal social structure must be legally secured and a system of guarantees must also be determined,” added AA.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied the island’s northern third.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
