Cyprus President travels to Switzerland for key territory talks

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades travelled to Mont Pelerin, Switzerland on Sunday for the upcoming talks, held from November 7 to 11, with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

The territorial issue will be the main topic on the negotiating table as both leaders aim to find a solution to the Cyprus Problem before 2017.

Prior to departing Cyprus for Mont Pelerin, Anastasiades stated: “I am going today to Switzerland with determination and goodwill, keeping in mind that the solution must meet the expectations and allay the concerns of the Cypriot people,” the President wrote on his Facebook page.

The President travelled to Mont Pelerin accompanied by chief negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, Government Spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides, close associates and eight experts and legal advisors.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied the island’s northern third.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015, aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
