German FM Steinmeier to talk with Greek leadership on Cyprus Problem

Germany’s Finance Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is set to discuss the latest developments concerning the Cyprus Problem on Sunday, according to a tweet from the German Foreign Ministry.

In addition to the Cyprus negotiations, Steinmeier will also discuss bilateral cooperation, the refugee crisis and EU relations.

The tweet, read: “Standing together in the face of crises: FM #Steinmeier now on his way to #Greece for talks on bilateral cooperation, #refugees, #Cyprus+#EU.

Greece’s Finance Ministry also tweeted on Sunday that Steinmeier will hold meetings with his counterpart Nikos Kotzias, President Prokopos Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, during the two-day visit.

Steinmeier follows on from French President Francois Hollande who discussed the Cyprus talks with Tsipras on Saturday.

Following his talks with the Greek PM, Cyprus Government Spokesperson, Nikos Christodoulides, tweeted that Hollande would be visiting Cyprus on Friday.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. UN-led talks have been underway since May 2015, with a view to reuniting the island under a federal roof.
