Report: Two jailed mayors since the last municipal elections in Cyprus

In the five years since municipal elections were last held, there have been a number of scandals, which led to the arrests and imprisonment of two mayors.

On December 6, 2014 a scandal broke out regarding the liquid waste management system in Paphos (SAPA), which ultimately led to the arrest and imprisonment of then mayor Savvas Vergas.

During questioning on the mismanagement of SAPA funds, Vergas admitted to his involvement.

Indicted on 61 charges, Vergas was found guilty and is serving a six year prison sentence, after admitting to receiving bribes worth half a million euros and 20,000 euros.

In another scandal, former Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiatis has been involved along with Vergas.

This time, the scandal involved the solid waste management facility in Koshi (XYTA-XYTY).

In March 2016, Louroudjiatis was arrested, and the case is currently being examined by the Assize Court.

There are 15 suspects being examined by the court, including Louroudjiatis.
