Greek main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis appeared informed on the problems that Road Tourism faces in Thrace due to the poor state of the Kipi Customs office, during his visit to the destination.
The region’s tourist operators have repeatedly pointed out the problem to the responsible government bodies but no real interest to solve it has been recorded until now. From his part, Mr. Mitsotakis immediately realized the impact that a modern Customs office would have of the region in order to facilitate road tourist flows from Turkey and highlighted it as a priority for the development of the destination.
The New Democracy leader noted during his visit to the Evros Region Government offices: “My presence here reaffirms my personal interest, as well as New Democracy’s support for the difficult work that has been undertaken by the Region government. It remains at the forefront of launching a series of very important development projects that will significantly improve the infrastructure of Thrace and Eastern Macedonia. In this way, it will be easier to attract investments and highlight the major comparative advantages of this beautiful part of Greece. I would like to seize this opportunity to point out that the sight which I saw this morning, visiting the Kipi Customs office, is an image that does not do justice to the Region or the country. This image is a major obstacle to cross-border trade and tourist visits from Turkey to Greece, that we all obviously want to promote. It is absolutely necessary to investigate alternative financing schemes for a new large investmen in order to build a new office in conjunction and cooperation with the private sector so that finally Thrace, Greece, Europe will acquire the gateway they deserve.“
