Municipal elections in Cyprus on Sunday were marked by highs and lows, as well as a few neck-and-neck races, Radio Proto reported on Monday.
The day began with lower voter turnout in the morning, but ended with approximately 62.3 per cent voter turnout.
In Nicosia voter turnout was recorded at 57.6 per cent, in Limassol 56.2 per cent, while in Famagusta and Larnaca over two-thirds of registered voters came to polls.
Larnaca’s voter turnout was recorded at 72.3 per cent, while Famagusta came in slightly higher with 72.5 per cent of voters heading to polls.
RESULTS OF LARGEST MUNICIPALITIES
According to the results, in Nicosia, incumbent Constantinos Yiorkadjis was able to hold the lead against his opponent Panayiotis Stavrinides, receiving 68.86 per cent of the votes.
The mayoral race in Limassol was tight, with incumbent Andreas Christou and his opponent Nikos Nicolaides in a neck-and-neck race until the very end of counting.
Nicolaides was able to beat Christou by just nine votes, securing the seat as mayor of Limassol.
In Strovolos, Nicosia Andreas Papacharalambous was able to beat Stella Mishaouli by 136 votes.
Larnaca’s new mayor will be Andreas Vyras, after he secured a total of 35.74 per cent of the vote amongst the six candidates running.
In Paphos, incumbent Phedon Phedonos was able to beat out opponent Akis Chrysomilos, securing 55.66 per cent of the vote.
Paralimni’s mayor will be Theodoros Pyrillis, after he secured 61.95 per cent of the vote.
In Famagusta another neck-and-neck race arose between incumbent Alexis Galanos and Simeon Ioannou, with Galanos securing the win by just 23 votes.
The Larnaca district municipal leaders were officially announced on Sunday night, while the other districts are expected to be officially announced today.
