The National Council of Foreign Affairs in Greece will meet to discuss the Cyprus problem exclusively, SigmaLive learnt on Friday.
The council (ESEP) will be meeting on Friday, at an event hosted by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.
In November at a meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, Kotzias informed all of the Greek political parties on the Cyprus problem for the first time.
At Friday’s meeting, representatives from all the parties will be present with the exception of far-right Golden Dawn, and the Greek Communist party (KKE), which chooses to not take part in the National council as a matter of principal, SigmaLive learnt.
In May ESEP also discussed the Cyprus problem during a meeting at which Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides was present.
Next week, the Permanent Secretaries of Greece and Turkey are set to meet once to discuss the issues of security and guarantees, ahead of the conference in Geneva.
Impending meeting
Sigma’s correspondent in Athens has said that the two permanent secretaries may potentially meet a second time to discuss an impending meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
President Nicos Anastasiades met with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Thursday, to discuss the upcoming Geneva conference.
After the meeting the President said that he would meet with Akinci on January 4 and potentially on January 7.
On his part, after returning to the occupied areas on Thursday, Akinci said a new system of guarantees should include Turkey.
The conference on Cyprus will start in Geneva on January 12. The two leaders will be talking with the guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece, and the UK) and other interested parties as required.
