Cyprus government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides has said the Greek Cypriot side needs to be careful on the issue raised by Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, challenging the Republic of Cyprus’ role in public debate.
In statements to Sigma’s Protoselido, he said that it is wrong to doubt the existence of the Republic, because the Turkish Cypriot side does it.
“We should understand that the Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the EU and the UN, and is recognised by all states. Only Turkey does not recognise it, but that doesn’t affect the legal status of the state,” Christodoulides said.
THE PRESENCE OF THE ROC AT THE GENEVA TALKS
Regarding the presence of the Republic at the Geneva talks on January 12, the government spokesperson said: “No discussion on an international treaty, which the Republic is part of, can occur without its presence. Since 1963, Turkey has supported that the Republic of Cyprus does not exist. This is occurring because it [Turkey] is serving its own interests.”
He added that the issues that involve the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus, are issues that cannot be legally doubted or interpreted differently.
“The Republic of Cyprus is not just secure because we make public statements about it, nor because it could potentially be written down in the first page of a solution. The security comes from the specific benefits in all the chapters of the Cyprus problem,” he said.
Christodoulides told Radio Proto that President Anastasiades also has the proposals of how best to represent the Republic in his hands.
PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONFERENCE
Christodoulides has said that the EU will be present in a high-level at the conference on Cyprus.
He added that the UN is working under the instructions of the Security Council and that no one can deny the permanent members from taking part in such a conference.
However, the government spokesperson added that substantial involvement in the process is not guaranteed.
“To have active involvement at the table, they will have to be invited,” he said.
