Turkish President Erdogan: I support Cyprus deal that satisfies both sides

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told UN chief Antonio Guterres that he “supports a just, lasting and comprehensive solution that would satisfy both sides,” during a telephone conversation today, reported SigmaLive’s Istanbul-based correspondent.

Erdogan and Guterres “exchanged their views” on the upcoming Geneva-based negotiations and Conference on Cyprus, also saying that “the next few days will provide a great opportunity to solve the Cyprus Problem.”

Erdogan’s call with Guterres follows on from his earlier call with British Prime Minister Theresa May, during which similar statements were made.

Reports today also suggested that Erdogan would not be attending the talks this week, instead Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is reportedly going to be Turkey’s chief representative on the negotiating table.

BACKGROUND

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot chief Mustafa Akinci decided earlier this month to resume their Swiss-based talks on January 9, 2017.

On January 11, they are expected to present their respective maps on the territorial chapter.

On January 12, the Conference on Cyprus will be convened with guarantor powers (Greece, the UK, Turkey) and other relevant parties.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof, following Turkey’s 1974 invasion and illegal occupation on the island.
