President Anastasiades content with Juncker's stance on Cyprus issue

President Nicos Anastasiades is satisfied with EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker’s stance on the ongoing Cyprus problem negotiations, according to an announcement made after his meeting in Malta on Friday.

Juncker and Anastasiades met on the side-lines of an unofficial EU Council Summit in Malta, the country currently holding the council’s presidency.

Anastasiades discussed with Juncker the role the EU should play at an upcoming Conference in order to achieve a mutually acceptable solution on security and guarantees, in line with the statement issued on January 12 in Geneva, after the first Conference.

They also discussed Ankara’s demand that its citizens enjoy the EU four fundamental freedoms in Cyprus after the solution, even if Turkey is not an EU member at the time. The two men also talked about the relevant letter conveyed to EC President with the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side Andreas Mavroyiannis.

President Anastasiades is said to have expressed satisfaction with the response from President Juncker on this subject.

On January 12 a Conference on Cyprus was convened by the UN, where the security and guarantees chapter of the issue was discussed for the first time since 1974 by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides along with the three guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey, and the UK).

Since the conference’s first meeting, discussions continued on the issue at a technical level in Mont Pelerin, where all the involved specialists made a list of the issues that must be answered on security and guarantees.

In Cyprus, President Anastasiades has met with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, where both men requested another Conference on Cyprus be convened to continue the discussions at a political level.
