Washington’s swamp and Russian quagmire drag down Podesta brothers

WASHINGTON – On the Washington, D.C. power meter, pragmatic lobbyist Tony Podesta and his idealistic Democratic operative younger brother John, Chicagoan sons of a Greek-American mother and Italian father, have been near the top for decades, withstanding all the down-and-dirty of politics.

Until John sank in the Washington swamp that then-Republican candidate Donald Trump promised to drain before he won the Presidency and Tony got pulled down by the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller into whether Russia hacked the 2016 election and ended Hillary Clinton’s hopes of being the First Woman, instead of the First Lady, in the White House.

The Brothers Podesta were power brokers on either end of the spectrum, both ensnared in different ways by the probe: John befallen by the alleged Russian cyberattack on allies of Clinton’s campaign when he was Chairman, Tony by scrutiny that his influential firm, the Podesta Group, was attached to Russia by its efforts to win support for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the Russia-aligned former President of Ukraine.
