Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras arrived on Wednesday at the Grand Hotel Palace of Thessaloniki, where the Regional Development Conference for Central Macedonia is being held.
At 17:00, the prime minister will meet with ministers and representatives of the local authorities who are participating in the three-day Conference, and he will will wrap up its works with the delivery of a keynote address at 19:30.
Levels of interest and participation in the 11th Regional Development Conference for Central Macedonia are both high, the prime minister’s office in Thessaloniki announced on Tuesday, based on figures for the number of participants on the first day, ANA reports.The conference began on Monday and will run until Wednesday while nearly 800 participants, some of them representing agencies, organisations and the media, more than 80,000 citizens watched via live streaming on the 1st day of the three-day conference on reconstructing production in Central Macedonia.
Tapping into the diversity of the tourism product, boosting investments for growth and extending the tourist season in the Central Macedonia Region were the focus of a presentation by Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura made a presentation in which she focused investments in diversifying the tourism product, extending the season and attracting investments to the Region.
She referred to 29 hotel investment plans included in the development law at a total budget of 111.5 million euros, 57 investment applications for existing or new 4- and 5-star hotel units, as well as licensing of ski resorts, thermal spring facilities, mountain resorts and campsites along with 200 projects for the modernization and upgrade of small and medium-sized tourism enterprises.
During 2017 the Region recorded an increase of approximately 10% in tourism and it is estimated that tourist arrivals exceeded 7 million. International aviation arrivals at Thessaloniki airport increased by more than 12%, with a corresponding increase in overnight stays of foreign visitors, while road traffic recorded a rise of 20%.In 2018, an increase of 17% is the so-called flight and airline planning has been recorded so far compared to the corresponding period last year.
