In an international environment full of challenges, with conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine as well as a trade war that is reshaping global balances, Greece is emerging as an “island” of stability and development. Yannis Mitsios, Political Scientist and Internationalist, explains to Tornos News that “our country hosted approximately 36 million tourists in the first nine months of 2025, with air traffic at 39 airports recording an increase of almost 5%.
Mr. Mitsios points out that Greece has proven in practice that it can function as a “stable, safe and peaceful destination” in a turbulent region, attracting millions of travelers seeking quality and security. With characteristic optimism, he adds: “Imagine what will happen when, hopefully, a permanent peace in Gaza and a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian issue are launched.”
Greece’s geographical location, mild climate, natural variations and variety of destinations constitute, according to Mr. Mitsios, strategic advantages that, in periods of stability, can boost the tourism product and strengthen the country’s investment potential.
The Greek internationalist believes that the Eastern Mediterranean is facing a new era of development. “We could even say that with a peaceful settlement in Gaza, which for the time being seems to be a difficult peace, great business, energy and construction prospects are opening up in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region that will have a direct positive impact on Greece’s tourism product.”
At the same time, Mr. Mitsios emphasizes that “the future exploitation of energy deposits and Renewable Energy Sources by Libya, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt and Israel, combined with the creation of new pipelines and submarine cables, the India-Middle East-Europe trade route (IMEC), the reconstruction of Gaza and the restoration of navigation through Suez, will create a new “El Dorado”, making the region a pole of attraction where tourism, real estate and construction will gain a significant share”.
Referring to Ukraine, Mr. Mitsios notes that a gradual peaceful settlement could restore European stability, opening up new prospects for development and investment cooperation, with a direct positive impact for Greece as well.
The country’s tourism industry, the internationalist emphasizes, now needs a coherent and long-term strategy that will focus on attracting digital nomads, strengthening new markets from Asia and America, the return of young Greeks abroad and upgrading the infrastructure of the region. Sustainable decentralization and the integration of innovation in tourism are key pillars of this approach.
Yiannis Mitsios concludes that Greece is at a critical juncture, where “strategic foresight” can transform its geographical and geopolitical position into a long-term advantage, opening a new, promising chapter for the country and future generations.
