Mayor of Mykonos: The Prime Minister should revoke the "Mykonosization" characterization

The Mayor of Mykonos, Christos Veronis, made a sharp public intervention, calling on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to revoke the characterization of “de-Mykonosization” of tourism, as stated at the Kathimerini “Reimagine Tourism” conference.

The mayor pointed out that this specific reference unjustifiably damages the image of the island and creates impressions that, as he noted, do not correspond to either its contribution or its international importance.

At this point, it should be emphasized that Christos Veronis is talking about an “attack” on Mykonos, emphasizing that the Prime Minister is presenting the island as an example to be avoided. At the same time, he states that Mykonos has been one of the strongest pillars of Greek tourism for decades, a globally recognizable landmark and a destination that contributes decisively to the country’s promotion and economic revenues.

The mayor clarifies that Mykonos cannot be treated as a symbol of exaggeration, but as a model of high-level service provision and international reputation. At the same time, as he emphasized, the essence of the discussion about the cruise should focus on strategic planning, the development of modern infrastructure and the balanced distribution of flows, and not on creating impressions that – as he said – do injustice to one of the most successful destinations in the world.

In support of this, Christos Veronis calls on the Prime Minister to reconsider his public discourse and avoid generalizations that, as he said, are adopted uncritically by those who find it convenient to target Mykonos. Concluding his statement, he points out that Mykonos is “moving forward” and that the State must support the municipality’s proposals and initiatives that strengthen both residents and visitors, with direct benefit for Greek tourism.
