The immediate allocation of the full amount collected this year from the “Climate Change Resilience Fee” to the three municipalities of the Corfu Regional Unit—exclusively for the urgent restoration of damages, improvement of the road network, and upgrading of critical infrastructure—is being requested by the MP for Kozani, and SYRIZA P.S. Tourism Spokesperson, Kalliopi Vetta, through a parliamentary submission to the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, and Tourism.
Ms. Vetta emphasizes that upgrading infrastructure and strengthening Corfu against extreme weather events are prerequisites for maintaining the island’s social cohesion and for sustainable tourism development.
In her submission, the MP highlights the concern of Corfu’s hoteliers regarding the urgent need to repair damages, improve the road network, and upgrade critical infrastructure affected by repeated severe weather events and heavy rainfall.
As she notes, the frequency and intensity of phenomena intensified by the climate crisis significantly strain Corfu’s already aging and insufficient infrastructure. Daily life for residents is disrupted, while lengthy restoration processes and insufficient funding exacerbate the situation and delay necessary interventions.
Furthermore, the MP calls on the leadership of the responsible Ministries to conduct the necessary oversight to ensure that these revenues are allocated exclusively for infrastructure restoration.
