The ‘Theogefyro’ natural bridge in Zitsa, Epirus collapses after centuries

A naturally formed bridge known as the “Theogefyro” (or God’s bridge in Greek) spanning the Kalama River in Zitsa, Ioannina of the Epirus Region in Greece collapsed late on Thursday afternoon, possibly due to recent heavy rains.

A naturally occurring geological formation that had been used to cross the Kalama River when the waters were high – even though its use had tapered off in recent years – the Theogefyro was considered a natural monument.

The natural arch was situated near the village Lisino and was formed by the river water as a natural pass.
