Greeks in northern city of Kavala defy cold to rescue beached dolphin (video)

After a passerby spotted a dolphin on the shore of Kariani Beach, near Kavala, locals rushed to save a second dolphin that had somehow become stuck on dry land, according to greekreporter.com.

A number of volunteers set out to rescue the majestic sea mammal on Thursday after they found it struggling on the beach.

They came across the second dolphin after they started attempts to move the first dolphin, found earlier that day, off the beach and back into the water.

Upon reaching the beach, the group discovered the dolphin still alive and set out to save the beautiful and intelligent aquatic mammal.

Following three or four physically-demanding and unsuccessful attempts at pushing the dolphin back into its natural habitat, the team, which also included passersby and members of animal welfare groups, decided to take drastic measures.

They lifted the big dolphin and placed it onto the bed of their truck so they could transport it to the harbor, where it could swim freely in deeper waters.

Miraculously, they brought the dolphin back to the sea unharmed, and it happily swam away, back into its natural habitat.
