Athens mayor: World Book Capital event will make city more book-friendly

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kamminis said on Tuesday his aim is to attract international interest on the city and make it more book-friendly, after the Greek capital was selected by UNESCO as World Book Capital for 2018 about two weeks ago.

“UNESCO’s decision is an honor. It reflects Athens’ international appeal and enhances our strategic pursuit to turn our city into a modern cultural destination,” Kaminis told journalists in a joint press conference with UNESCO in Athens.

He also talked about the modern art exhibition documenta14, which will be held in April 2017, noting that Athens is becoming a destination for modern culture by utilizing the unique ancient heritage “to give precedence to the new dynamics of creative expression”.
