National Observatory data: Summers are getting hotter in Athens

Every summer since 2001 has been hotter in Athens than all the average highs recorded over the 1961-90 period, recent data from the National Observatory in Athens has shown.

Over those 16 years, every one of the 48 summer months was warmer than in the previous period mentioned in the study. In fact, in 11 of the 48 months, the average daytime high was as much as 3 degrees Celsius above the equivalent in 1961-90 period.

“The hottest months were August 2006, July 2007 and July 2012, which was the warmest summer in the past 16 years,” says NOA researcher Dr Costas Lagouvardos.
