The Post Office Travel Money City Costs Barometer 2017 includes Athens among the cheapest European cities to spend a weekend.
The annual City Costs Barometer from Post Office Travel Money reveals that a quartet of ‘sunshine’ cities has broken the stranglehold of Europe’s historic eastern capitals this year to feature among the 10 rated best value from 36 surveyed.
Key findings include:
- Prices are cheapest of all in Paphos – this year’s joint European City of Culture, so 2017 will be a great time to visit the historic city in western Cyprus. Other ‘sunshine cities’ in the best value top 10 are Lisbon, Athens and Palma
- Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, is the cheapest of six Eastern European cities and a close runner-up to Paphos but Riga, Warsaw, Krakow and Budapest are close on its heels
- Warsaw and Prague are still cheapest for meals and drinks – a cost you can’t avoid on a city break.
- With prices up for UK tourists in the majority of cities this year – due mainly to the weaker pound – it’ll pay to compare costs between cities before booking!
