Piraeus port’s uniqueness was structured by the social forces that developed over the course of time. Since its founding in the 5th century B.C. to date, with its re-establishment in the 19th century, a variety of identity versions co-exist in the city due to its large harbor, which is a passage, a place of installation, a shelter and an opportunity.
The city’s constitution, the communication and collectivity have progressed together with the social, racial and gender divisions, class inequalities and cultural differences. From the metics of ancient Greece to the interwar refugees, from the 19th century bourgeois to the “mob” of Plato’s harbor, Piraeus’ Contrast has always existed to reform people and renew hope for the future.
The exhibition titled “Contrasts” at Piraeus’ Archaeological Museum comes to complete the biography of the city, yet it does not constitute a typical historical record. The narrative is constructively structured on the idea of Contrast and highlights the forces, old and new, which shape the forms of division and union of society during time.
