Athens is in the midst of preparing for its year long celebration of books, reading, culture and events promoting knowledge, greekcitytimes.com reports in the following article:
Starting April 23, Greece’s capital will be known as the “World Book Capital” for 2018, which is a global UNESCO cultural event.
“Athens this year has the opportunity to certify that it is one of the most important destinations of culture, knowledge and history,” notes Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis.
“Books Everywhere” will be the slogan for the Greek capital for a year, where across the city there will be an array of celebrations with a series of book-related events, including reading gatherings, seminars and conferences, workshops and competitions, activities for adults and kids.
Events will include book readings in unexpected locations for passers-by and round table discussions with prominent Greek and international authors.
Until April 22, 2019, Athens invites locals and visitors, people from all around the nation and the globe, to come and enjoy literary magic as well as to discover some unknown cultural aspects in institutes around the city, libraries, cultural sites and big festivals.
Through the “World Book Capital” title, Athens will aim to inspire and cultivate the desire for knowledge along with the enjoyment of reading, as well as to leave its cultural footprint in modern Greek culture.
