European tourism: Strong rise in city break travel during 2017

City break tourism in Europe has recorded a growth of 7.7% in 2017, featuring a 5.2% growth in overnight stays by Europeans and a 9.2% rise in overnight stays by international visitors, according to preliminary results of European Cities Benchmarking Report, which will be presented shortly.

The list of the ten cities with most overnight stays remained the same as in 2016 with the top three spots held by London (+ 7.6%), Paris (+7.5 %) and Berlin (+ 0.3%).

Madrid surpassed Barcelona while the rest of the cities retained the same positions.

Regarding main source markets for European cities, Russia, which showed a sharp decline in 2016 by 12.4%, rebounded strongly (+27.3%) followed by China with + 17.3% and the US with + 15.5%, while Italy continued to drop (-3.4%).

The main source markets for European cities include the USA (12%) Germany (8%) and the UK (7%), accounting for almost 30% of the total international travelers in European cities.

Italy, Russia and Japan increased their overnight stays as main source markets for European cities.

London ranked again first for international visitors with +8% overnight stays, followed by Paris (+ 11.1%).

On average, the top-10 cities saw a 6% increase in bednights as shown below:
