Athens most affordable city destination in western Europe

Athens is the most affordable city destination in western Europe and among the 10 most affordable in the whole continent, according to the 2018 City Costs Barometer from Post Office Travel Money.

Key findings include:

  • If you’re planning to take a short break in Europe this spring and are looking for the best possible value, the 10th annual City Costs Barometer from Post Office Travel Money suggests heading to one of seven Eastern European capitals that took the top places in this year’s survey of 36 cities.
  • Poland’s second city Krakow has pulled ahead of its rivals to emerge as cheapest for a bargain break. In a clean sweep for Eastern Europe at the top of the barometer table, the Baltic capitals of Vilnius (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia) are runners-up to Krakow, while Warsaw and Budapest are also great value
  • It’s not just in Eastern Europe that prices are low. Athens is also great value and cheapest in Western Europe – with by far the lowest meal costs of any city surveyed – while Lisbon and Lille also make the top 10
  • Prices have fallen since last spring in a fifth of the cities surveyed with the biggest fall of over 15% in Stockholm, cheapest of the Nordic capitals. But, with prices up for UK tourists in the majority of cities, it will pay to compare costs between cities before booking!

These findings are based on a survey of 36 European cities. Researchers looked into a variety of cost factors to discover which city is financially best for a short vacation this spring. They compared the cost of alcohol, dinner for two, a two-night stay in a hotel, popular attractions, and local travel to determine just where a pair of budget-savvy travelers should visit.

Kraków, Poland, and six other Eastern European capitals took spots in the top seven most affordable cities, making a strong case for a trip to the eastern part of the continent. However, Athens, Lisbon, and Lille, located in Western Europe, also managed to crack the top 10. Here are 10 of the most affordable spots to weekend in Europe (and roughly how much you can expect to budget for each one).

1. Kraków, Poland: $235
2. Vilnius, Lithuania: $236
3. Riga, Latvia: $245
4. Warsaw, Poland: $257
5. Budapest, Hungary: $261
6. Moscow, Russia: $284
7. Prague, Czech Republic: $284
8. Athens, Greece: $285
9. Lisbon, Portugal: $297
10. Lille, France: $297
